The Bell of the Earnest S Marsh Train at Disneyland With The Tower of Terror

You Can’t Recreate This Shot, But You Can Learn How to Recognize Similar Opportunities

Photography isn’t just about light, composition, and timing—it’s also about awareness. It’s about seeing opportunities that others walk past. And sometimes, those moments are so unique, so fleeting, that even if you knew exactly how the photo was taken… you still couldn’t recreate it.

Take this shot for example.

It’s a close-up photo of the golden bell on the Earnest S. Marsh train, part of the Disneyland Railroad. The bell itself is crowned by a majestic American bald eagle ornament, gleaming against the rich red paint of the locomotive. But the true magic of the photo isn’t just in the color contrast or the detail. It’s in the moment—and the setting.

This photo was taken at the Main Street, U.S.A. train station during a rare window between January 2016 and July 2017, when the Disneyland Railroad was shut down to accommodate the rerouting of tracks for the construction of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.

Normally, these steam-powered trains are off-limits up front. For good reason—these are real locomotives, hot and dangerous. But during the extended closure, Disneyland did something unexpected: instead of stashing the trains out of sight, they parked them at stations and invited guests to explore them.

I seized the chance.

On this particular day, the Earnest S. Marsh was parked right up front at Main Street Station. With the steam engine turned off, guests could approach and appreciate the details—like the bell—up close. And in that moment, with careful positioning and a keen eye, I aligned my frame so the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror in Disney California Adventure appeared in the background, softly blurred by a shallow depth of field.

Here’s the kicker: I didn’t know it at the time, but even that detail was fleeting. Within a year, the Tower of Terror would be transformed into Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT!, permanently altering the skyline of Hollywood Land. What started as a photo of a train bell became a layered time capsule—one that no one else could recreate, even if the trains were shut down again.

Some guests complain when rides are closed during their visit, feeling like they’re missing out. But if you’re a photographer—or just someone who loves finding beauty in the unexpected—these moments of change are pure gold. The construction walls might hide something under renovation, but they also hint at something rare. Something fleeting. Something you’ll never see again once it’s done.

So no, you can’t recreate this shot. But you can train your eye to recognize your own version of this opportunity when it appears.
